ESPN’s subsidiary ESPN Regional Television has formed an eight-team men’s college basketball tournament “Diamond Head Classic” to be held in Honolulu through Dec. 22 – 25 in 2009. The men’s college basketball tournament will be played for three days and will have 12 games. Championship matches to be played on Dec. 25 and be played by two teams that remain undefeated. The tournament schedule and other related information’s will be released in the spring or summer. ESPN Regional Television also owns and operates The Charleston Classic, The O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off ,The 76 Classic and The Old Spice Classic.
“The HTA is pleased to partner with ESPN Regional Television on the inaugural Diamond Head Classic, which will provide an invaluable, unique marketing opportunity for Hawaii’s, not only in terms of TV exposure, but also in terms of reaching markets important to Hawaii’s,” said David Uchiyama, vice president of tourism marketing for the Hawaii’s Tourism Authority. “This is more than a premier collegiate sporting event for our community to experience, this is an opportunity to showcase the warmth, beauty and aloha spirit of Hawaii’s to a national audience. In addition, the event will attract participating teams, their families and fans to visit Oahu during a traditionally slow travel period for Hawaii.”
