MLB Network has announced that it will broadcast a special feature about former New York Yankees captain Thurman Munson. This broadcast will mark the 30th anniversary of Munson’s death, who spent his entire career with the Yankees, died at age 32 in an airplane accident on August 2, 1979 in Canton, Ohio during his ninth Major League season.
Thurman Munson segment will first broadcast between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. ET and re-air throughout the night on MLB Tonight and Quick Pitch.
Munson biographer Marty Appel, author of the recently released Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain, gives an in-depth interview during the segment, telling first-person accounts of the accident that killed Munson and the aftermath that surrounded the Yankees in the days following his death. The piece features interviews with Munson’s widow, Diana, and former Yankees teammates Goose Gossage, Lou Piniella, Gene Michael, Graig Nettles and the late Bobby Murcer. Included throughout are several clips of archival footage of the accident’s aftermath, breaking news from that day and the entire Yankees team attending Munson’s funeral.
Tony Petitti, President and Chief Executive Officer of MLB Network said “Thurman Munson’s death marked a very emotional time in baseball and 30 years later, that feeling still resonates. Munson’s life and career continue to have a tremendous impact on the game and we feel a responsibility to fans to spotlight his legacy.”
